Do not read so loudly as to drown out the person beside you; if you cannot hear the person next to you reading, that means you are reading too loudly and should lower your voice. If you find yourself reading too slowly or too quickly, adjust your pace to match the common rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>For scriptures of praise or celebration, the officiant leads with a slightly quicker pace, in a joyful and celebratory tone for the assembly to follow, different from the ordinary reading voice.<\/p>\n<p>When reciting scripture, whether standing or kneeling, the body must be held upright, with the head bowed slightly. The mind must stay focused on the verse being recited so as not to misread it. Whenever a verse names the Buddha, Heaven, an Immortal, a Saint, or a Spirit, one must bow the head. While bowing, the arms remain folded (if standing) or held before the chest (if kneeling) as usual &#8212; do not let the arms drop or press against the ground, which would turn the bow into a prostration. <strong>At the final line of any scripture being recited, one must bow the head.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Note: When bowing, do not lower the head too quickly &#8212; if the head is already bowed low after only half the verse has been read, the words will not be heard clearly, and one must then hold the bow too long waiting for the next verse; but if one raises the head too soon, one falls out of rhythm with the fellow practitioners nearby.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW TO RECITE SCRIPTURE AND BOW When reciting scripture together in a group ceremony, one should read in a normal voice, unhurried, keeping proper rhythm and in harmony with the others.
