Each day has four ceremonial hours: 6:00 (Meo), 11:00 (Ngo), 18:00 (Dau), and 23:00 (Ty), attended by the officiating steward or disciples on duty.<\/p>\n
Fellow believers who are at the Temple or live nearby performing meritorious service during the day may, if convenient, join in the four daily ceremonies.<\/p>\n
The ceremonies observed alongside the Meo, Ngo, and Dau hours include:<\/p>\n
1. Ceremony to request entry into short-term or long-term retreat.<\/p>\n
2. Ceremony of gratitude upon completing a retreat or a meditation course.<\/p>\n
3. Ceremony of kneeling Repentance upon entering the seasonal meditation course.<\/p>\n
4. Ceremony of reciting the Repentance text before entering a meditation course.<\/p>\n
5. Ceremony commemorating Immortals, Saints, and Spirits.<\/p>\n
6. Ceremony praying for the recovery of the sick.<\/p>\n
7. Ceremony sounding the U Minh bell and praying for the deliverance of souls.<\/p>\n
8. Ceremony of repentance for marital discord.<\/p>\n
9. Ceremony of prayer upon the birth of a child.<\/p>\n
On the evenings of the 14th and 30th of each lunar month (the 29th in short months), a ceremony is held praying for peace and blessings for all people, which male and female disciples from the city are invited to attend.<\/p>\n
In addition, ceremonies for anniversaries, saints’ days, and the Three Origins festivals throughout the year are observed according to the following schedule:<\/p>\n
1. Anniversary of the Jade Emperor and the ceremony to dispel ill fortune, evening of the 8th of the 1st month.<\/p>\n
2. Upper Origin Full Moon: Heavenly Official Bestows Blessings, evening of the 14th and midday of the 15th of the 1st month.<\/p>\n
3. Anniversary of Thai Thuong Lao Quan, evening of the 14th of the 2nd month.<\/p>\n
4. Anniversary of Shakyamuni Buddha, evening of the 14th of the 4th month.<\/p>\n
5. Commemoration of Zen Master Van Hanh, afternoon of the 15th of the 5th month.<\/p>\n
6. Anniversary of Hong Quan Lao To, evening of the 6th of the 7th month.<\/p>\n
7. Middle Origin Full Moon: Earthly Official Pardons Sins, evening of the 14th and midday of the 15th of the 7th month.<\/p>\n
8. Anniversary of the Queen Mother of the Jade Pool (Dieu Tri Kim Mau), evening of the 17th of the 7th month.<\/p>\n
9. Commemoration of Immortal Maiden Ha, afternoon of the 8th of the 8th month.<\/p>\n
10. Commemoration of Saint Tran Hung Dao, afternoon of the 20th of the 8th month.<\/p>\n
11. Anniversary of Confucius, evening of the 26th of the 8th month.<\/p>\n
12. Lower Origin Full Moon: Water Official Relieves Hardship, evening of the 14th and midday of the 15th of the 10th month.<\/p>\n
13. Memorial for Venerable Minh Thien, the founding elders, and departed Minh Ly disciples, midday of the 15th of the 11th month.<\/p>\n
14. Anniversary of Amitabha Buddha and commemoration of Zen Master Bac Nha, evening of the 16th of the 11th month.<\/p>\n
15. Anniversary of the Founding of Minh Ly Dao, evening of the 26th of the 11th month.<\/p>\n
16. Ceremony of the Kitchen God’s Ascension and Farewell to the Spirits, evening of the 23rd of the 12th month.<\/p>\n
17. Ceremony welcoming the ancestors (in the rear hall), afternoon of the 29th or 30th of the 12th month.<\/p>\n
18. Ceremony welcoming the Kitchen God and the return of the Spirits, afternoon of the 29th or 30th of the 12th month (Dau hour).<\/p>\n
19. New Year’s Eve ceremony, offering to Heaven and praying for peace, evening of the 29th or 30th of the 12th month.<\/p>\n
There are also special ceremonies held on an irregular basis, whenever decided by the Sacred Council or requested by a disciple’s family, such as:<\/p>\n
— Ceremony of initiation or entry into the temple.<\/p>\n
— Ceremony praying for the deliverance of the newly deceased, and the weekly memorial rites.<\/p>\n
