Time presses on, and the work of spreading the teaching still calls for great effort and virtue from each of you. You must clearly recognize the mission that Heaven has placed upon each one’s shoulders. How, then, can this great responsibility be fully carried out?

If you do not strive to reflect carefully, you will not see how weighty your own responsibility truly is. If, this time, the Supreme Being has manifested in this world for a mission of such great magnitude, you must understand this as an especially fortunate opportunity, one not easily met a second time. If you fail to broaden your vision, you will surely regard yourselves as no different from the monks of Buddhism, the sages of Taoism, or the disciples of Confucius and Mencius. And if those other religions had already completed their mission, what further need would there be for anyone at all?

Minh Ly came into being with a solemn and vital mission: to continue and complete the work of salvation begun by those earlier teachers of the Way! Since the mission differs, the manner of carrying it out cannot be the same. Let this not be misunderstood, lest the work be spoiled.

If Minh Ly had appeared merely in the form of a religion like Buddhism, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, or Christianity, it would have no distinct meaning, and would only add yet another faction, yet another branch, creating further confusion for the world. If Minh Ly existed solely to transmit the Dharma and save living beings, to liberate the souls of humankind, the Three Teachings already do that. If Minh Ly existed only to address the affairs of daily life, there are already doctrines and ideologies for that. If Minh Ly existed merely to bring order to the world, there are already statesmen for that — there would be no need for us at all, and our presence would only add one more source of conflict.

It is precisely because of conflict, discord, clashing ideals, divided faiths, and the struggle for factional advantage that factions compete against one another, and so a “new teaching” had to arise. It arose to bring unity to humankind, to put an end to hatred and separation — and it is in this that the founding of a new religion has meaning. The role of Minh Ly, then, is to resolve however many troubles trouble humankind, through a life of love and truth shared among people.

But can each of you truly hold firm faith in this sacred mission and carry through to the end this lofty duty, in an age when people have advanced in every respect?

As for religious teaching, every religion across the world already has an organization deeply and widely spread among humankind, its influence penetrating the masses as though it had soaked into the hearts of the people. In history, they can point to a fully developed philosophy and a vast body of followers. In doctrine, they possess skill both ingenious and consummate. In politics and society, they are wealthy and powerful — with bombs, guns, ships, aircraft, tanks, armies… We, born late and coming after, belong to a weak nation and a humble people — how could we dare to aspire to matters on the scale of Heaven? It is truly hard to believe!

But calm yourselves a moment, worthy ones, and reflect carefully: What will the world of today come to? What will become of humankind? Where will the religions, doctrines, and ideologies of the world all lead? What are people thinking, what do they want, what do they believe in, in order to resolve the many sufferings now reigning in their hearts?

Do they not wish for peace? Do they not wish to live a life of love and wholesomeness? Is that longing, that waiting for some divine power to preserve their lives in safety and peace, not real? And yet today no one truly listens to another, no one sincerely attends to this, because everyone thinks only in terms of “the superior prevails, the inferior falls” — so who would yield to whom?

For this reason, wars cold and wars hot will go on unfolding, one battlefield after another consuming itself in mutual destruction. Until, on some day, the world is left with but a single unrivaled hero. Yet even that hero will be subject to Heaven’s judgment, and humankind will still hold grudges against one another. So it is only those willing to live by truth and by love who will endure.

You yourselves can see what is to come in the times ahead: if no call rings out, if Heaven’s heart does not turn back to look upon us, then this Lower Era will end in utter destruction. It is for this reason that Heaven’s Messengers have gone forth across the world, lighting torches to guide the way, sounding the sacred horn to call humankind to halt its steps and await the day of happiness.

Though our strength is weak and our talent humble, our hearts are filled with clarity and love. Beside us stands a guiding power. The path before us is level and even, and behind us follow countless more powers of the Dharma, continuing to support the one common future of the whole world!

The duty of this newly arisen teaching is nothing other than to distill the teachings and doctrines of East and West, ancient and modern, into a single program for self-cultivation and self-salvation, so as to guide humankind. That pure and singular essence, once gathered together, becomes a harmonizing organization, and our mission carries the duty of the vanguard — to prepare the way for a Perfect Sovereign of the Dharma yet to come. That Sovereign will hold sufficient grace and majesty to halt the suffering now unfolding, and to move the hearts of the people back toward the one shared Truth. That power, that Dharma, has been entrusted to each of you in part, so that you may build merit, forge good affinity with humankind, and, relying on this, return to your original nature.

Hold firm and trust that behind you, before you, above your head, and within your heart, a Spirit of Truth is watching over you so that you may fulfill your duty. That Spirit has not yet appeared clearly, because you yourselves still lack sufficient faith and virtue.

The Spirit of Truth will come to us, and will come before all others as well. Were that Spirit not to arise, could we truly fulfill this mission? Yet although the cycle of fortune has waned, the collective karma of humankind remains great, and the mechanism of destruction is still unfolding — destroying the old so as to build the new future. And so that Spirit still remains hidden, awaiting the mandate.

To know, then, what the guiding principles of Minh Ly are, and what each person’s program of practice should be, look deeply into the chapters of explanation that follow, and all will become clear.

TRAN HUNG DAO

O leaders of this Way, strive on!
