One should not recite so loudly as to drown out the person beside them — if you cannot hear the person next to you reciting, this means you are reciting too loudly, and should lower your voice. If you find yourself reciting too slowly or too quickly, adjust your pace to match the group’s common rhythm.

For scriptures of praise or celebration, the officiant leading the recitation may chant slightly faster, in a joyful and celebratory tone, for the assembly to follow — this differs from the manner of ordinary recitation.

While reciting scripture, whether standing or kneeling, the body must be held upright, with the head bowed slightly forward. One’s attention must remain fixed on the verse being recited, so as not to make errors. Whenever a verse names the Buddha, Heaven, an Immortal, Saint, or Spirit, one must bow the head. While bowing, the hands must remain folded (if standing) or clasped before the chest (if kneeling) as usual — they should not be released or placed on the ground, which would turn the bow into a full prostration. At the final line of any scripture recited, one must always bow the head.

Note: When bowing, do not lower the head too quickly — for if the head is already bowed low after only half the verse has been recited, the words will not be heard clearly, and one must remain bowed too long while waiting for the next verse.
